There
are twenty-seven (28) certified Sheriff's deputies: 2 Sergeants, 4 Corporals, 22 Patrolmen that work in the
Public Safety Division directed by a Captain. There are four (4) districts
that encompass almost 1800 square miles from San Juan County to the
north, the New Mexico state line to the south, Montezuma County to
the west and Archuleta County to the east. Patrol deputies conduct
the initial criminal investigations on a variety of calls, including
crimes against persons, crimes against property and warrant arrest.
They enforce DUI and traffic offense violations on county roads and
when appropriate on the state highways. They are also available to
assist the local fire, ambulance and law enforcement agencies in the
county. In 2004, Deputies responded to approximately 20,500 calls
for service, had 1,900 case reports and 631 arrests.
